| The ginkgo tree is waiting for its buds to sprout in the spring. There are many shoots growing from the base. It would be great if some of these would grow into large trunks in the future. |

| Many shoots have grown from the base and appear to be thickening. Among these, the trunk that will support the tree in the future will likely grow. |

| The flowering period has ended, and small green fruits are now visible,
with a few of the earlier fruits still remaining on the tree. The foliage is dense, the branches droop under its weight, and the basal shoots have also unfolded many leaves. I found an unusual leaf. In Japan, this type is commonly called a ‘trumpet ginkgo’ leaf, and because it is so rare, some people say that finding one brings good fortune. Ginkgo leaves are normally flat, but this one is shaped like the flared end of a trumpet, forming a conical shape. It does not look as though two edges have fused together; rather, it appears to have had no split from the beginning. In Hiroshima Prefecture, there is one large ginkgo tree in the northern region that produces these leaves every year. Since this is the first time I have discovered one here, it is likely either a spontaneous mutation or simply so rare that it had gone unnoticed until now. I will continue observing it to see whether such leaves appear every year. |

<How to visit> Please check the map on the left. Get off Shukkeien-mae train stop and head for Shukkeien. When you pay the entrance fee and enter the park, head north and turn right when you reach the pond. If you come to the other side of the pond, climb a hill a little. |
